Let's go baby, where the action is... A night of 60's + 70's rare Soul, Motown, R'n'B + Garage. DJ's Gerd Baum + Buxton. In the "Börse" Wuppertal 30 oct 04.
The AFSC Party on friday set the mood for the weekend, I was half expecting a decentish turn out from the AFSC but sadly this was not to be. With work commitments and bad heads it was me and on my lonesome left to fly the flag! I must admit that I wasn't looking forward to going by my sad self but, about the only thing that comes to us without effort is old age. As luck would have it I received a phone call from Gabby in Amsterdam who had spoken to Trifle about the nighter and wanted to come with me.............. and could she bring a friend, result! Two crazy freaky deaky Dutch chicks who were gagging for over weight middle aged squadies who ride scooters!!! I was definitely going!!!!

Gabby and Ramona arrived at my pad after a three hour drive at about 2200hrs, Carol (understanding wife) was feeling far too fragile to come with us and so it was with great reluctance that I ventured out into the night with these two little Dutch girls.
The journey to Wuppertal was a giggle to say the least, Gabby managed to get us lost adding an hour onto the journey and this was compounded by a pea soup fog that forced us to a crawling pace for twenty odd miles! But we did arrive and found the venue in Wuppertal quickly and easy thanks to some excellent directions from Gerd Baum.

The Börse nightspot has an excellent sound system, superb dance floor and comfortably holds about 300 people. Bars are in the rear; coat check is convenient; the bar staff are polite and quick, and the whole club experience is cozy. The midsized venue is perfect for intimate musical acts and nighters.

On our arrival Gabby and Ramona hit the floor whilst Gerd Baum did his first set. He played predominately oldies and RnB rarities that sat well with the punters. I must admit that the numbers were down disappointingly and this did slow the pace down some what but the music played was top notch! The evening was strictly vinyl and the only CD to be found was in peoples cars! This is often taken for granted but the difference between the vinyl junkies and the CD heads is a depth of knowledge and quality that makes you appreciate the commitment the collector DJ's have. "Keep it real, keep it hardcore!" I spoke to Gerd at the end of his set:
The AFSC Do you have a play list?
Gerd Baum No I just watch the dance floor and try to gage what to play, it's easy to play safe but people don't want to travel such distances to hear the same old same old, they want to hear rare soul music.
The AFSC What was the last record you bought?
Gerd Baum ALDER RAY-MY HEART IS IN DANGER
ALDER RAY-MY HEART IS IN DANGER.rm Click to hear it (You will need real player just save target as)
The AFSC Can I ask you how much?
Gerd Baum About 50 dollars from the states.
The AFSC Excellent record, up-tempo dancer with brilliant female vocals! Are you getting a lot of stuff from e-bay?
Gerd Baum We get quite a lot but they are not very cheap!

The AFSC Is there a scene in Wuppertal? This is the second nighter this year with a lot of Scooterists, Skins, Soulies and students? What's the scene like?
Gerd Baum I'm not sure about the scene here because most people travel. It is good to see some local people here but the main stay is the in crowd that ravel from venue to venue.
The AFSC Gerd, thanks for talking to us.
Gerd Baum The AFSC is very welcome!

The evening was excellent, down on numbers but still well worth the effort to get there. Watch the menu page for details of the next Nighters in Germany!
Yours Simon Cuerden (With two freaky deaky Dutch chicks)
