Great Nighter! And an opportunity to catch up with some old pals from the
UK. A few beers with Nige and a chance to shove a microphone under Terry
Davies’s nose! The last time I interviewed him was nearly four years ago for
Manifesto. Here Nige and Terry are both spinning their stuff in front of an
eager German crowd.
How are the sound of Prestwich soul nights going?
Terry Well
to be honest I’m not the person to be answering that; the right people to
ask are those who turn up month in month out.
Simon What do you
think makes a good club?
Terry We have a great line up with at
least seven top DJ’s every month, we do mix it up giving a lot of unknowns
the chance to play along side the more established DJ’s. The Modern room is
going from strength to strength as well. The dance floor is perfect and the
venue seams Taylor made for Soul.
Simon Let’s talk
about tonight, how many records did you bring over with you?
Terry About 500

Simon What’s your
‘all else fails’ tune?
Terry Not too sure really, this is a
German crowd and to be honest if you travel like I have tonight I am here to
do my thing. There are a few records that you shouldn’t be without. Harold
Melvin – Get out, Just a little misunderstanding, Ruby Andrews, Sam Dees,
the Isley Brothers, Your gonna love my baby, do I love you. There are many
more.
Simon Are you a
millionaire?
Terry at this Terry laughs and says, only if I win the lottery!

Simon How much did
it cost you to get the pressing done of Otis Redding......Lovin' by the
pound?
Terry Forty quid! With Chris King.
Simon I did hear
that you had recorded it in a booth at Imber.
Terry I deny all knowledge of
that!

| Hi | Champ | Sunny and Silke |
Simon Terry, your
quite known for Otis Redding......Lovin' by the pound Larry Trider....Carbon
copy and Phonetics.....Just a boys dream, did you break these records at
TSOP?
Terry I can’t take credit for that
because Larry Trider....Carbon copy and Phonetics.....Just a boys dream were
quite well know by the collectors, I was behind Lovin' by the pound
definitely and I did push Larry Trider and The Phonetics.

Simon How much did
you pay for Just a boys dream?
Terry Seven hundred pounds but its value
is a lot more now.
Simon What is your
slant on playing CD’s at venues?
Terry No comment

Simon Well I’m
gonna press you!
Terry OK, then my answer is NO!
Simon In your
opinion, do you feel the scene has changed for the better or worse over the
last eight-ten years?
Terry I don’t think it’s changed much. It
is as strong as it was, it’s a great time for music and every one is getting
what they want.

Simon How did the
Sweden trip differ from the German trips?
Terry The scenes are both a lot
younger, Sweden was terrific. I really enjoyed it and trying to choose
between the two is impossible. Both have a good, young soul crowd who love
the music. We are having a great time visiting.

Simon What is your
worst DJing Experience?
At this Terry goes silent and Lynne and the girls start to giggle! This is
the first time I have seen Terry speechless and I move swiftly along!
“Mental note, find out from Lynn at a later date!”
Have you ever DJ’d at Imber?
Terry I DJ’d there last year
during the “Imber Anniversary Weekender” Brilliant night and one that is
very special to Lynn and myself.
Simon How do you
answer your critics when they say TSOP deliberately clash with the Imber
Nighters?
Terry This is not true! Yes TSOP
had a fall out with the Imber crew some years ago, but that was a personal
thing between me, Lynne and some of her family. I met Lynne there many years
ago, people forget this, Lynn is a local girl and her mum still lives there.

Simon I gave Terry
some Imber badges for his collection.
Why did you sell your Scooter baby love?
Terry Baby love is in my record
box!
Simon One last
question, do you like marmite?
Terry No!
Simon Thanks
Terry, the Nighter was with out doubt thee best Nighter I have ever been to
in Germany! Nige Brown played a fantastic set and his collection of rare
Motown is breath taking! I loved every record and it was a treat not to hear
the same old same old! Well done Nige!
Carsten Fox dazzled us, he always does! Certainly my favourite German DJ top
bloke, top tunes and top spot! Peter had the crowd eating out of his hand;
he knows how to work the crowd with out ever having to play safe! Michael
Wink gave an exellent account of himself with his box of rare soul playing
to an eager German audience. Kubi did his funky stuff and a round of
applause given to him at the end of his set was well deserved and quite an
honour over here in Germany! Champ gave the Scooterists what they wanted and
all in all a superb Nighter.
I would honestly say that Carsten Fox got it right on this night and if you
were planning a trip across, then just do it! This is a brilliant event.

Silke's revue
Hi Peeps,
I was a bit ill the last days (No, not from too much drinks :-) and not in shape
to write up a review of the Allnighter last saturday.... I try my best to give
you a view on that event.
Wuppertal is a small town in the middle of the Rhine-Ruhr area,
with a famous old suspension (cable) railway (hope that describes it in the
right way?), My first visit to Wuppertal and it looked
very weird in the darkness with this supporting pillar across this very hilly
town....anyway....we found the venue (It was a huge old brick building
without any windows (!?)) We paid our
€8
entrance fee, a bit too expensive we thought, for an Allnighter in Germany, in a location like this!
Dark, high round
vault ceiling, open brickwork, a 2nd level on half of the hall with a bar
upstairs, it smelled a bit clammy, but it wasn't cold.....it looked like a bit
like a castle dungeon!....much more suitable for hardcore independent
party's incl. sacrificed
virgins.
The dance floor was also....stone. The 2nd room was a smaller one with
a lower ceiling and some rotten mattress on boxes, very dark and also very
clammy..... I know, it's always very hard to find a proper venue for an
Allnighter here in Germany.
The Punters were from all (Sub-) cultures.....Mods, Scooterists, Psychobillies,
Punks, Skins, and before I forget to mention them....a few so named Soulies ....
around 300-400 altogether, I reckon (I'm really bad in that...), the music was
mostly good in my opinion....the sets of Terry and Nige were above the
rest of the sets (that's my opinion - because I've heard the
other sets much too often, and for me it's nothing new even
the order is predictable, so the sets of the 2 Brits were quite refreshing
for me)
Dancing on the stone floor was really hard work....even with the new discovered Tanzglätte (ordinary Talcum - but there's a supplier in Austria or South Germany who sells it as Dr.Bechers Tanzglätte ( i.e. smoothness for proper dancing) in plastic bottles. On this floor it only worked when mixed with beer;-(
Anyway...it was ok, but not unforgettable....there seamed to be a bit less of an atmosphere usualy found at Nighters? , must have been this strange venue?
We left at around 4AM and went to a
friends home in Recklinghausen, nearly 60 km away further up north, together
with Alex in our car and Tine (Mrs Fox) and the 3 Davies Girls
(Lynne and her 2 daughters) at the other car....I think Nige and Terry stayed
till the end !
Cheers
Silke
