Friday was the welcome end to another day in the Corps. Home for a shower pack a
few things & await the arrival of Craig (my feet are on fire) Ballantyne. He was
due at mine at around five, but tipped up early. Apparently this was because
Steve Evans was unfortunately not coming. Mrs Powell made up a plateful of
sarnies for us to eat but Craig ate most of them. Anyway, we set off to John
Wymark`s via Soltau as this was to avoid the cobbles in one of the villages just
up the road, so route master Ballantyne told me. Only we went out the back of
camp via another set of cobbles! Seems that the altzimers is in the advance
stages Kathleen. After an uneventful drive up to Bergen, not via the usual
Neinburg route that Steve tends to favour, we got to Johns to find him cooking
the evening meal. Being the ever thoughtful host he offered us a feed.
I said no thanks as Helen had just made me a few sandwiches. Craig on the other
hand said bring it on& sat down for some more scoff. Oh by the way he says the
weight is falling off him??? We got off for the long journey ahead and arrived
about 15 mins later to the event. For those that have been to the run of the
mill scooter rally here in Germany will know that the usual thing is loads of
drunken people, no kids, & burn outs happening every twenty minutes. This was
the more sedate end of the market. We were welcomed with a polo shirt, coffee &
cake tokens, & a champagne glass with sparkling wine topped with a strawberry.
After a beer or two aptly named Celle beer we set up camp on a rather nice
football field. John was going home in the early hours so he didn’t bring a
tent, & was leaving his scooter till the next day. He was taking his daughter to
ballet early the next morning so it wasn’t to be a late one. After putting up
the home for the weekend we all went into the evenings entertainment. On the way
in Craig & John met up with an old friend called Rommel, this he said was
because his scooter was yellow & possibly German? Im not so sure! The night went
on and Bert with his good lady from Berlin SC were in attendance so we chewed
the fat for a while. John by this time was on the dance floor giving it some to
all the classics like The snake, Red light spells danger & Bobby vee’s rubber
ball amongst other things. This was because the age group was between 9 years
and approx 80. The company was great and the beer cold so no complaints from us,
also it was nice to see some scooterists who are older than Craig!. Around 1am
John, did a Gaz Powell special and disappeared. It wasn’t long after that me &
Craig
went to our respective tents for a well deserved kip.10.30am came all to quickly
for my liking but the bladder had stretched to capacity & demanded to be
relived, this being a posh place I felt that I had to go to the toilets so the
bushes wasn’t an option. Craig was up fresh as ever but we both agreed that the
celler beer was something that just had to be respected. Off to the Grill stop
next for some breakfast. Craig got a call from Daz stokes to say that he was at
the venue & that people kept laughing whilst pointing to the biggest Vespa flag
he’d ever seen. This became apparent when we arrived back at the site as he was
on a Lambretta.
The afternoon arrived & Helen brought Zak & Zoe, our two children up for the
day. As I said earlier this was an event for all, and I mean all! Daz was now
being looked after by a new friend. Rita was a very nice person and she took a
real shine to our Daz. It turns out that she was a dealer (of scooters ) and had
brought the only other Lambretta to the event, so they had something in common
straight away. Basty from Vespa Club Celle (VCC) came over for a chat and said
that he’d known Rita even when she was called Rolf. Ahem enough said!
The day went on with the usual ride out followed by fun and games in the
afternoon. Sadly the AFSC
could
not front a team as we are all on the sick. Afterwards the club gave a dinner &
presented the prizes with the
Bielefed posse taking the main silverware. Sorry Daz no presentation for best
Lammy here. It was around
then that John came back & told us of the prior evenings shenanigans. Apparently
the celler beer had claimed yet another poor victim. His bladder is not as
stretchy as it used to be & unfortunately he lost control. Mrs Wymark was not
very happy to say the least. The evening was very quite with most people
retiring early for the trip back in the morning. Not so for the
AFSC we have our own up and
coming DJ in Daz. He went and helped fill the dance floor with his own set
Comprising of Red light, The snake x3, and, so im told the last song ever played
at Wigan Casino, and all this was at half ten. I must say the weekend was
organised impeccably so a big thank you to all the boys and girls in Vespa Club
Celle. And last but not least a big thanks to Craig, John, Daz & Helen, Zac &
Zoe for making the weekend.
Cheers Gary.
