SOUL BOWL Germany 20.04.2002

By Simon Cuerden

60's, 70's, Northern, Motown, Rare, Classics, ...DJ's: Michael Wink (Blow Up),), Thomas Liss (FZW-Nighter), Agent 00 Soul (Soul Super Bowl) & Guest Supported by Soulflat - your No.1 Soul-Dealer!!! In Dusseldorf Germany.

That is what was advertised, what I got was the closed thing to a British Allnighter in Germany that I have ever been to! 500 Soulies and Scooterists gridlocked the entrance to the Soul Bowl Nighter in Dusseldorf, trying to get into the best Nighter Germany has seen in a long time. Heading up the sonic assault was the amazing Michael Wink (Blow Up), who played a mix of beautiful beats that brought to life the eager Nighter crowd. I've gotta find me somebody The Vel-vets, What good am I Mickie Champion, It really hurts me girl The Carstairs, I kept on dancing Doug Banks, I can't break the news to myself Ben E King, to name but a few of the tracks that greeted us on entrance!

OK there was beer on the floor and the dancing wasn’t going to turn any heads, but the soul police had taken a night off leaving just soulful people to get down and party the way it should! I love it! Leave you preconceptions at the door, pin your ears back, have a drink and a dance, what more can you ask?

Think Bretby with a better sound system you've got it! Peter Werhand (A Deeper Shade) brought the crowd to fever pitch for the entrance of Agent 00 Soul (Soul Super Bowl) who is in my opinion a more diverse DJ. Butch Baker - Fat Man At The Go Go, Chris Clark - Do I Love You (indeed I Do), Detroit Soul - All Of My Life, Dusty Springfield - What's It Gonna Be, Ike & Tina Turner - Somebody - Somewhere Needs You

From Seventies Newies to relentlessly driving Oldie Stompers with the now ubiquitous RnB, the crowd were mesmerised by the magic that these much under-rated DJ’s produced. The crowd roared and bounced, so much so that there were concerns to whether the antique floor beneath them could take it. Playing out the newest tracks hot from the UK just went to prove what dance masters the German DJ’s can be, given the right venue. 500 sweaty Soulies and Scooterists hardly left the floor all night!

At 1.30am the master DJ resident for FZW-Nighter Thomas Liss took to the decks to keep the crowd going till 4am.

An awesome night, some incredible soulful music and a fantastic crowd. Soul Bowl Dusseldorf, we love you!
